The E Center Changes its Name

Last week, there was news that The E Center has changed it’s name. The E Center will now be known as The Maverik Center. I am personally very excited about this. It has a great ring to it, even though The E Center name has been around longer than The Energy Solutions Arena, the new name will help keep them from being confused. The Maverik stores have done well in Utah and blend well with the Desert, Outdoors, Activity based atmosphere of the state.

Regarding the name change, people are always up in arms about change and there are two sides of the coin on this; some like the corporate names and some would rather have them stay the name originally given to it. Some like the corporate names because the venue has better exposer, recongnition, and support; however, it can lead the venu to appear to be a big franchise amidst the community and looking more corporate. Taking on a private, neighborhood name makes the venue blend into the neighborhood with a style and ”close to home” ownership of a personal, private, and community owned event center.

Which is better? Promoting and advertising a corporate business entity receiving corporate backing, name, and brand recognition. Or promoting a community, neighborhood, and family event center, with a risk of greater attention.

This also means that I have a new title, as “The Head Photographer of The Maverik Center”.

Concert: Angles and Airwaves

This was a fantastic concert. The opening act for Weezer made a huge impression on the concert goers. Everyone was on their feet. They enjoyed the music and had a great time.

Concert: Muse

The concert for Muse was good. I didn’t stay for the entire concert, but was there for the first three songs as is customary and allowed by the band management. Muse came out standing on a 360 degree stage which had three columns for each member of the band to stand on. They were as high as the rear seating where they could be seen from anywhere in the venue. The arena was screaming, enjoying the music and they played very well.

Concert: No Doubt

In May 2009, the band No Doubt, featuring Gwen Stefani performed a magnificent concert at The E Center in West Valley City, Utah. They put on a great show. The band started the night with a white curtain draped in front of the stage to hide the equipment and it lent well to the surprise. The stage was completely white, including the floor, backdrop and even the drums, keyboards, stands, and including the band members. The final appearance that topped it off were the touches of black trim everywhere as accents. It was a great show.

Gwen Stefani of No Doubt

Gwen Stefani came out in a traditional No Doubt punk outfit, which was of course a separation from her tradtional trendy outfits of her solo singing career. I happen to love both, but the sounds and music of No Doubt have alway brought out the memories of their great times together.

I was hearing nothing but great things about the upcoming concert and how excited everybody was to see it. There were a large number of people that were jealous of my attending the concert and I assured them that it would as great as they thought it would be, and as great as I knew it would be. =)

That same group of people did not blink an eye at the fact they hadn’t produced a new album and that they were doing the concert on shear respect of the band and their old songs. There was no doubt (pun intended) that they put on a great show and did justice to every aspiration.

Brian Regan

Brian Regan is a tremendous comedian. He has toured the nation and been extremely successful with is humor, wit, and especially good taste in comedy. There aren’t many comedians that uphold a great repetoir of good jokes, but if you haven’t seen Brian, he sure aims to please.

Concert: Matchbox Twenty

On Thursday, I went to photograph the Matchbox Twenty concert at The E Center. It was one of the best concerts I’ve been to. The MB20 concert was packed with people, a sellout crowd. Rob Thomas is a great artist and I have grown to appreciate his music more having seen him interact with the audience, and put on a great show.

Opening for MB20 was Allanis Morisett. With due respect, she is a great singer, but has some odd habits. It was hard to photograph her because she created this traveling track from one corner of the stage to the other in a v-shape with a pivot point in the middle of the stage. She would go forward to one corner of the stage and backup to the pivot point, pivot, and go to the other corner, backing up again to the pivot point and repeating this over and over. I eventually had to just stay to one side of the stage and wait until her pattern met backup up with me and I could take her photo.
