My wife bought the Blackberry Curve 8320 this weekend and is just loving it. She had the older model from four years ago; the one with the dial and back button on the right side, those buttons gave out. After four years, that’s awesome! … way to go RIM! You’re making an awesome product! We’re staying with you. Keep it up.

Now, she wanted me to get some music ringtones on her Blackberry and I have a Mac. So this information is based on the BB 8320 and a MacBook. Also, this tutorial does NOT condone copying music or anything illegal. But is intended to just be a tutorial. Be polite and purchase your music. Give respect to those artists that do their work. It’s best to keep in mind that if you feel it might be wrong, it probably is.

Well, my wife wanted some ringtones. So using my Macbook I decided to give her samples. After I made 0:35 second snippets from some our favorite tunes in our CD library collection, I wanted to get them to her device. Now of course, I have a Mac (and a Windows machine, but I like my Mac better), so we’ll stay on the Mac platform; however, it is about the same process for Windows.

For this tutorial I’ll refer to the Blackberry 8320 as SnapJagBB and the Mac as SnapJagMac; because it’s easier to follow the instructions with these names. It’s what you’ll have to search for. Note: This process can also be followed with the Blackberry 8100.

Engage the Bluetooth on the SnapJagBB

Go to Blackberry Dashboard | Bluetooth Setup | Menu | Add Device | Select SnapJagMac

Start pairing to the SnapJagMac from the SnapJagBB

Enter the PIN on the SnapJagBB that will be typed in to the SnapJagMac when asked, it doesn’t matter when four-digit pin you use, so just go with “1111″

Engage the Bluetooth on the SnapJagMac if it isn’t already

On SnapJagMac, type in the pin, “1111″, as a response from the SnapJagBB

The pairing will now be complete

On SnapJagMac, go to the Applications | Utilities and start the Bluetooth File Transfer utility

On SnapJagBB, go to the BB Dashboard | Media | Ringtones | Media Card (or other large media storage to receive the file from SnapJagMac) | Menu | Receive Using Bluetooth

On SnapJagMac, send a file using Bluetooth, in the dialog, pick the M4A music snippet. Note: keep the name of the file smaller rather than longer because that’s what will show up in your menus on the BB and that can be a pain. Click to send the file.

On SnapJagBB, accept all the dialogs to accept the file and storage location.

Done.

Setup your ringtone. Which I can explain in another post.

Well, here it goes again. It’s been almost seven months to the day since I performed my last blackberry upgrade. What a champ of a phone. I have dropped it numerous times, installed a few new apps, and have run it through the “data ringer”. I use it so much and have put it through so much that it’d be tough to go to another type of phone ever again! It’s great.

I bought a new memory upgrade and I will discuss adding the new card into the phone further in the post.

I’m on the T-Mobile Blackberry 8100 with version v4.2.1.107 (platform 2.3.0.83). It’s now time to look at the website I told you about before to see if there is a new updated. Go here (http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade/) and find your phone model.

At this time, there is no new update. So I’ll describe now my experience adding the new card, follow this link to get to the post.

I have been trying to remove multiple emails on the Blackberry 8100 since I started using my first one and finally found a solution. I don’t like sitting for hours and removing hundreds of emails that can be examined later on my desktop. I want to get at what’s important at the moment and move on.

It wasn’t very obvious, but I did slap my forehead once I found it. I am so excited to have found this new method, I’m sure it’ll help you too.

Here’s how to do it … while in email:

put your cursor on a Date Group Header

click the track ball

access the Full Menu

scroll to the top of the menu

click on the menu option Delete Prior

This will remove all emails prior to, and including the Date Group Header.

Nice! Now you don’t have to sit there for hours and remove every single email on your Blackberry 8100. This option may be available for others, but I don’t have others to try.

I have five (5) emails setup in my Blackberry 8100 phone and I had a problem having the primary email account saved and able to use it.

First I setup the emails by:

accessing to the Setup Internet E-mail from the menu

click on Email Accounts

For every email account, I repeated the process of Add An Email Account and supplied the appropriate settings.

My first email became my default email account which was my personal email account. The next three emails were more personal emails and the last was for business. I wanted the business email to be the primary, so I tried to set it using the following commands.

Menu

Options

Advanced Options

Message Services

Select the desired email to be the primary.

Press the return button (not the power/hangup button)

Click Save (if you didn’t get the option to save, return to the menu and make sure it’s saved)

Send an email to test that it came from your new default email.

If this didn’t work. Which for me it didn’t, I decided to shutdown my phone, by pressing and holding the Power/Hangup button for more than 5 seconds and then turned the phone back on, by doing the same with the Power/Hangup button.

I tested another email and it worked. Hope this helps you.

If you don’t want to go through all the details of my tests below, that’s fine, the short of it is this … I got these messages out my stream by uninstalling everything on the desktop related to the blackberry and marking the selection for just Internet Email and leaving BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) alone.

Wow, what a huge problem. I’m getting so many extra emails, it’s really annoying.

I decided to upgrade my Desktop Manager to the latest version. Everything went well with the upgrade. I can never remember when I do this, which selection is to be checked for BES or Internet Email. I used to work at a company where BES was available and it was great. Now my work doesn’t have a BES and I therefore resort to the Internet Email Services. Well, I checked the BES because the second part of the question was correct.

Well this is why I stink at taking tests because usually “the entire question has to be correct” in order to get it right! =) So, what’s the problem? I am getting the many emails with the statement “This message is used to carry data between the BlackBerry” in it on both my email and my office Outlook Inbox. Some blogs indicate that there is a bad CMIME Service Book. I deleted the Desktop CMIME Service Book on my Blackberry (Options | Advanced Options | Service Book | Desktop (CMIME)) but that didn’t work. Blog that helped make my decision.

I have looked all over for the fix. I had first gone back in and unchecked the BES and checked Internet Email, but I’m still getting them, it appears to be just not as many. Still annoying though. I’m now taking it to the next level, I’ve synced all my stuff, which, because I trust my Blackberry details more, I don’t mind, and haven’t had too many problems in the past syncing; and now I am uninstalling the Blackberry Desktop (including all personal preferences) and reinstalling it.

Here goes … I’m doing with the uninstall, I’m going to reboot, just in case to get rid of any remnants of the application. Back in a sec …

The uninstall went well, I have now reinstalled, even updated my Blackberry OS. See my other post. The syncing was not on by default. I turned it on, had to wait a few minutes for it to recognize that I wanted to do this and the button would enable. When it did, I setup my Outlook sync options and then did a sync. CLEAN! Not a hitch. I’m now going to see if I get these continuous message I started with.

Multiple Calendars don’t physically exist in the Blackberry.

You can sync multiple calendars from your PC Outlook to your single calendar on the Blackberry. This can include ICAL Google Calendars that have been added/registered in your Outlook.

I have already updated to the latest Desktop Software and upgraded my OS (see the BB upgrade post). I am now interested in syncing my 5 internet folders from Google and my work Outlook calendar. I have already added my Internet Calendars (how to add ICALs in Outlook is not described here) and are registered in my Outlook account.

It is expected that this is a one-way feature, meaning I can’t add something to my Blackberry and expect it to upload all the way to the Google Calendar (ICAL) because I don’t believe the Blackberry knows the difference between the ICAL and Outlook mappings. But I am going to try changing an ICAL event on the Blackberry to see how it’s handled when syncing back to the registered ICAL in Outlook.

The steps to sync between registered ICALs and my Blackberry device are:

Open the Blackberry Desktop Manager

Click on Synchronize link

Choose the Configuration tab

Click the Configure sync… button

Select the Calendar application

Click the Advanced… button

Select the calendar mapping (should right now be 1 folder mapped)

Click on the Map Folder… button

Expand the Internet Calendars node

Find the calendar to sync, selected it and click the Add button

You will now see 2 folders mapped in the calendar mapping list

Click OK all the way down the dialogs until you get back to the Configuration tab

Choose the Synchronize tab

Click the Synchronize button

A new sync dialog will appear asking to apply X amount of items to the device, click Accept

The sync will finish and you should now see on your device all the calendar items from the Internet Calendar(s) you added. It is true that there is only one calendar on the BB, but the items are marked (I don’t know how yet) belonging to the mapped calendar.

Removing ICAL from Sync

I took the first ICAL I added out of the mapping, and added second ICAL. While syncing, a dialog like before told me it was going to delete the entries from the first ICAL and then also add the entries from the second ICAL. Now that it’s synced, everything on the BB looks like I expect.

Duplicates from Outlook and ICAL

Another test is to remove one of the duplicates on my Blackberry because it existed in my Outlook and the Google Calendar, obviously because I needed it on my Blackberry and the Google Calendars hadn’t synced successfully yet. I went in to Outlook and deleted my Outlook recurring event. I resynced and it told me I was going to delete the event as expected, and now there’s only one event in my Blackberry. The Google Calender event on my Blackberry is even recognized as a series (recurring) event. Cool.

Changing the ICAL event on the BlackBerry

I want to see what happens now when I change the already synced event (from Google -> Outlook Registered ICAL -> Mapped Sync on Blackberry) to time 15 minutes later than originally scheduled and see how the return sync behaves. The sync dialog indicates one change.

I checked the event in Outlook and it did not updated. Hmm. OK. Well, it doesn’t go back to there. I’ll have to try a delete also to see what happens. I’m going to update the ICAL event now to the new time. Can’t make changes to the Read only folder.

Summary

Once I get the folder synced, it doesn’t go back the other way at all. That’s ok for now. I’ll have to see if other applications offer updating. At least for now, I can sync to the Blackberry so everything is there without messing up my company Outlook calendar. =)

Multiple ICAL Mappings

If you want to add a second, third, or fourth ICAL mapping from your Google account, follow the same steps above and it will sync. Mind you that any changes on your Blackberry will not carry back to Outlook, nor Google.

This link (http://www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade/) will give those that own the Blackberry Pearl 8100 Smart PDA the opportunity to upgrade their operating system. I did the update last night and I’ve been happy so far with the process, which went off without a hitch, and the visible adjustments to make the already great BB experience look good, are even better.

This is an upgrade from version 4.2.0.62 to 4.2.1.107. Get the numbers from your BB at Menu | Options | About.

A few of the changes, for me at least, that impact me, will be reviewed here.

New Display Layout

I love the new menu layout. It’s great to not have to go down a big long menu to get to the things at the bottom. Now, the menu layout is in a grid format and you can go sideways and up-and-down like the old blackberry. It’s great. If you haven’t done the upgrade yet, do it!

Jabra Bluetooth

I bought the Jabra BT5020 headset and it’s been kinda flaky. It starts off working for about 5-10 seconds clear and strong, but then quickly dies to nothing. There’s static, the call breaks up … the reason for bringing it up, is that I couldn’t get my Jabra to work very well and the upgrade notes indicate “improved Bluetooth functionality”. Well, I’ll try it out and let you know.

Result

This Jabra Bluetooth BT5020 is not working very well. I wouldn’t recommend it. It might work with other phones, but the test I’ve done and the upgrade I’ve done hasn’t helped at all.
